I had my annual ob/gyn appointment today. I can’t tell you how much I was dreading this visit. They just aren’t as exciting when you aren’t pregnant. This one was worse because I also have no health insurance and knew it was costing me an arm and leg just to be seen.
I spoke with the doctor about some of the issues I have had recently since my cycles restarted. After discussing the changes with him, he feels that my PCOS is coming back in full force. In order to not lose my milk supply, I have to “shut down the ovaries”. He said that my ovaries are overworking once again and that if my milk supply is not irreparably damaged yet, it will be soon if I continue to cycle.
He offered me to do one of two things… I could take the mini-pill and continue to breastfeed or I could take Metformin and not (at least not as long). He said that he feels that it best to stop my ovaries from working (the mini-pill) than to force my body to start to ovulate (metformin) and therefore take a chance of the increased estrogen putting an end to my breastfeeding.
I chose to continue nursing and will be starting the mini-pill tomorrow. It is $34 a month so I am not at all happy about that but will do what I need to so that we can continue to breastfeed for awhile longer.
I hate PCOS. I really, really do.
