Johnny and Kenzie love computer games. I try hard to make sure they are only playing things that are educational though and sometimes that can be a struggle. Thanks to Jump Start, my worries have been lessened!
We were recently given the opportunity to review Jump Start Virtual World. When I told Johnny, he was beyond excited. We already had a CD game that he played often. When I logged him onto the site, I wasn’t sure what to expect but knew that if it was anything like the game we had, he was going to love it. What I found was so much more than I could have asked for.
Johnny was able to create his own avatar, called a Jumpeez. He can change his clothes, his hair, his eyes, and other personal characteristics. We were able to pick his name that he uses and we were ready to get started. The thing is, I didn’t have to stand over him to help him. The virtual world is created for children aged 3 to 10 and it truly is for those ages. Once logged on, Johnny is completely capable of playing on the virtual world all by himself… and play he does!
I have sat and watched him play several times and there is much more involved than just playing. What I love is that Johnny thinks he is playing the whole time but he is learning too. There is a movie area that he can watch mini-videos that teach lessons. He can fly and swim in parts of the virtual world. There are all kinds of skills taught including counting, spelling, sounds, math facts, and many more. This virtual world teaches kids how to follow directions and gives them their own house to decorate with coins they earn from playing. They can also save their coins to buy pets! One other incentive for kids to complete the tasks is that they build a storybook. Once they get all parts of the storybook, they can “read” it! Johnny gets so very excited when he gets parts of this storybook. Johnny hasn’t even discovered all of the areas yet on the virtual world… there is just that much to see and do.
Kenzie’s area is basically the same but for older kids. Her skills are related to her age and the activities are as well. Kenzie hasn’t been able to play as much as Johnny (because he loves it so much and we use it as a reward) but she has played some and enjoys it just as much as Johnny. I enjoy that she likes to play and learn at the same time. Being able to find a way for my kids to learn while enjoying it makes me one happy mommy!
One area that I really want to get into is the Enchanted Sanctuary where you can raise and take care of a dragon! Doesn’t that sound like fun? I have considered logging on to Johnny or Kenzie’s game and checking this out myself.
Jump Start will be adding more portals, features, and learning games over the next year. I encourage you to get started with Jump Start virtual world now though. There are several membership options you can purchase. Included in your membership are downloadable games your child can play as well. Finally, I wanted to mention that your child will see other children playing from time to time. Their Jumpeez name will appear and sometimes they may run into you. This is a completely safe environment though and you can’t interact with other players, just see them. Johnny and Kenzie think it is pretty cool to be on the web with others playing the same game and I like they are safe while doing so.
Jump Start has kindly offered one of you a 3 month membership to the virtual online world! If you have a child between the ages of 3 and 10, you won’t want to miss this opportunity to try the virtual world for free!
