I mentioned the other day that I am considered advanced maternal age because I will turn 35 before the baby is born. My doctor explained (in my words now) that it is almost misleading. Yes, there are more birth defects and other problems once a mother is over 35. But, there are also many more women getting pregnant after 35 by choice. One thing is not necessarily in relation to the other. Does that make sense?
Well, I had my prenatal appointment this past Tuesday. The appointment was so wonderful. Switching providers for this pregnancy was a fantastic decision. I feel so comfortable with my physician and I truly feel like he cares about me and my feelings. I did get a sneak peak at the baby. My OB does a quick ultrasound during each visit. It lasted no longer than 30 seconds but it was truly an amazing thing to see my little baby. Last time, there was just a little bean there. This week, I saw a head moving around and arms waving. It was wonderful and put my mind at ease in a matter of seconds. I walked out of the office and started to cry… tears of joy.
I agreed to do any test related to the advanced maternal age that is non-invasive. I don’t want to do anything that could harm the baby at this point. What that means is that I will go for a “First Look” ultrasound and will get some blood drawn. The First Look will tell the risk of having a baby with Down’s Syndrome (for example) by measuring the amount of fluid at the base of the baby’s neck. The blood test will help determine risk for neural tube issues. The results from both put together with other factors, such as my age, will determine the overall risk of having a child that has some disability or illness. The tests will determine other potential risk such as cardiac and kidney as well.
My appointment for this ultrasound and blood work is next Friday (the 15th). I am nervous but not about the tests. I am nervous about being at the tests alone. The tests don’t say for certain that there is something wrong. But, I fear any unsavory news may send my already-on-the-edge emotions over the cliff. Please think about me next Friday. I will be sure to update when I get more news about the results.
Back to my appointment… my blood pressure was fantastic, I lost 2 pounds, urine was good. The baby looked perfect and gave me a special wave to let me know that he/she is doing well.
Oh and a quick update about the name issue… I think we may have a boy and girl name. Nothing is set in stone, but we are on our way to a more definite name for this baby.
