Johnny is starting Preschool in a few short weeks. To some this might not seem like a big deal, but in our house, it is huge. Johnny has been home with me consistently since he was six months old when I quit working to be a SAHM. He has gone to a few Vacation Bible School sessions and Sunday School but nothing quite as big of a deal as Preschool is.
I have been trying to prepare him as best as I know how for going to school and being away from me. He will be going three mornings a week. That is three mornings out of the house more than he is currently doing and I expect there will be some adjustment to be made. Reading books is something that we do regularly so I thought it would be a great way to talk to him about going to school.
We were sent a Barefoot Books book called Ruby’s School Walk by Kathryn White recently and I read it to Johnny. What I love about the book is that it is very bright and colorful. I find that books that are full of great pictures definitely keep attention better than those that aren’t. I also like the theme of the book. Ruby spends her walk to school worried about all the things she “sees” that her mommy doesn’t. She tells herself over and over that “I must be brave, I must be strong”. Whether it be bats or witches, Ruby is prepared to see them and to scare them off.
This book is a great read for little kids going out into the big world on their own for school. Whether it be Preschool like Johnny or Kindergarten for bigger kids, I think the theme of being brave is a good one. There will be some ups and downs in our journey of starting school, but I will remind Johnny that Ruby was brave and strong and he can be too.
You can purchase Ruby’s School Walk from Barefoot Books for $16.99.
