Synopsis
After three years in Boston attending college, Mallory Wells has come home to Casper, Maine to care for her father, who is dying from cancer. She left Casper without looking back, leaving her small-town life and everyone in it, behind. Including her sexy high school sweetheart.
Luke Bates was devastated when Mallory left him for the city life. He managed to pull himself together and move on, even if only just barely. When Mallory shows up in town, Luke vows to stay away from her at all costs. So why does he keep checking in on her and her father, showing up when he’s clearly uninvited? Maybe Luke isn’t as ‘over her’ as he thought.

My Thoughts
I started this book yesterday. With all that happened last week, I just totally spaced on reading. I was a bit worried that I wouldn’t get the book finished in time for my review. I am happy to say that this book was a quick and engaging read. I enjoyed the characters, even though I was left feeling a bit unsettled with their history. I can see that the future of the characters (besides Luke and Mallory) will be covered in future books in the Broken Series.
Luke seems like such a good guy to me and I enjoyed him from the beginning. Mallory, on the other hand, was a spoiled brat and I could see that from page one. I wanted them to be together but I wanted her to do some major growing up first. The participation of the other characters really made this book for me though. I think that without them, the story may have fallen a bit flat. I am very eager to see what happens in the future with them all.
I gave this story 3 stars. The only reason it doesn’t rank higher is because I would have liked a more detailed story. It gave you all the information you needed but I think a bit more depth would have been good. It seemed we were just bouncing along with Mallory with little thought as to how we got where we were. Getting a better look into her thoughts and why she made some decisions would have helped with the story development a bit.
I definitely would recommend this story to someone looking for a new adult, contemporary romance. There are a few “hot” scenes included between our two lead characters. Besides that though, the book is emotional and heart-wrenching at times. The death of Mallory’s father brought me to tears. There were also some funny parts; again by the other characters. I am going to be on the lookout for their novels. Be sure to check out Broken Promises and let me know what you think!
