My kids wear me out. Between the three of them, we are never without excitement. It really is a ton of fun to have active kids, but they are also the reason my blood pressure goes up regularly. Why? They are all accident prone! From Jemma’s skinned knees to Joley’s soccer bruises, the girls are the ones that show signs of an active lifestyle the most. It isn’t in my nature to treat my kids like they belong in a bubble so I do all I can to keep them safe.
Here are some tips that you can use to survive your own accident prone child (or just keep your family safe):
- Prepare for activity! Whenever Joley goes out to play in a soccer practice or game, she always warms up. Kids need to prepare their bodies for activity and warming up is how to do that. They should do stretches ! Warming up reduces their chance of injury. Also keep them hydrated with plenty of fluids and make sure they rest periodically during any activity.
- Buy and use appropriate gear for the sport you are playing. As a coach and parent, one of the preparations I make is to ensure we have the right gear for them to play safely. Shin guards for soccer and helmets for baseball are two examples. Even if you think the gear isn’t necessary, think about the reason it was created and why it is important to wear that piece of equipment. Any time you play a physical sport, the gear is there to protect the child.
- Teach children what it means to listen to their bodies. Just as you would stop an activity if it were causing you pain or discomfort, you need teach your children to do the same. If they feel any pain or discomfort while playing, they should notify their coach and get out of the game. No one wants to sit on the sidelines but teaching kids that pushing through the pain can cause serious injury is important.
- As the parent, you need to make sure your family is covered. Be prepared off the field too! To do this, you can turn to Aflac. If an athlete with a supplemental accident insurance plan experiences a serious injury, it doesn’t mean that they are in a hopeless situation. Aflac can help provide peace of mind and cash benefits to help you and your family get back in the game fast. With Aflac’s new One Day Pay promise, accident claims can even be processed in just ONE DAY.
In my husband’s line of work, he can be injured fairly easily. That injury would cost my family a lot more than the fees on the hospital bill. It would be devastating because he is the breadwinner of our family. That is why we need supplemental insurance. Through Aflac’s One Day Pay initiative, Aflac U.S. can receive, process, approve and disburse payment for eligible claims in one business day. This would be so helpful to my family if my husband were ever injured and unable to work
Did you catch that? In one business day, you can go from scared and unsure what you are going to do TO feeling a sense of relief and security in knowing that you are going to be able to cover your daily needs thanks to Aflac. Cash benefits can be used to help cover emergency treatment, hospital stays and medical exams but also for other expenses, such as transportation costs, lodging needs and daily living expenses like groceries or monthly bills.
How do you get Aflac? Aflac’s accident insurance is offered through a direct basis and through company benefits programs. While you may not be able to purchase accident insurance until your company offers open enrollment each fall, it is important to understand what accident insurance is and how it can help keep your family’s finances protected prior to selecting next year’s benefits.
This summer, in advance of open enrollment, take some time to look at what insurance is offered by your employer to be sure you have the right coverage for your family!
Are you and your family covered by Aflac? Do you have accident prone family members that this would be beneficial for?
