You know that feeling when a new book is released by one of your favorite authors?? That feeling of need to read the book as soon as possible?? Well, that is what happened to me recently when Shelly Crane released Wide Awake. I knew I had to get my hands on it. Shelly is in my top 5 authors of all time. Her work is some of the first I read when I started reading Indie books and part of the reason I became hooked. She is an amazing author with a true gift. So, here you go….
Synopsis
When Emma Walker wakes up in the hospital with no knowledge of how she got there, she learns that she’s been in a coma for six months. Strangers show up and claim to be her parents, but she can’t remember them. She can’t remember anyone. Not her friends, not even her boyfriend. Even though she can’t remember, everyone wants her to just pick up where she left off, but what she learns about the ‘old her’ makes her start to wish she’d never woken up. Her boyfriend breaks up with the new girl he’s dating to be with her, her parents want her to start planning for college, her friends want their leader back, and her physical therapist with the hazel eyes keeps his distance to save his position at the hospital.
Will she ever feel like she recognizes the girl in the mirror?
The Characters
Emma is our main female character and she is someone that I think I would have hated in high school. Well, at least the Emma pre-accident. She appeared to be a stuck-up, snobby, only-concerned-with-appearances girl. I feel so much anxiety for her though as she wakes up to a world she doesn’t know. I feel such pain for her that she is expected to pick up her life where it left off and she doesn’t even know what and where that was. I feel so much joy for her as she finds her true self. Emma redeems herself huge in my book throughout this book. She realizes who she is and who she wants to be. She also realizes what her old life was all about and that she wants nothing to do with that. I give her credit because she tried to be the person they all wanted her to be. I give her more credit for being the person she wants to be.
Mason is an amazing, loving, and caring man. He seems so genuine and real from the moment you meet him in this book. I had some doubts about his behaviors from time to time but I kept bringing myself back to the fact that he just seems to be inherently good. What you find out about Mason breaks my heart. He is truly a man that looks out for others and gives before getting in so many ways. The things he does for his mother, his brother, and then Emma make him out to be one of the best book boyfriends I have ever come across. Leave it to Shelly to totally mess with my book boyfriends top 10 list! Mason is a gem and one that is perfect for Emma. He works at making her happy and giving her the things she needs to blossom into the person she is supposed to be.
My thoughts
Well, if you haven’t figured it out yet, I loved this book. You can add this on to my 5 stars on the Shelly Crane book list. Wide Awake had me from the beginning. I read this book in a day because I couldn’t put it down. I love Shelly Crane’s work because it always gets me thinking. I remember even small details about this book even today (almost a month after reading it) because of the great detail and Shelly’s ability to describe the story to you. I can picture Emma’s hospital room, her house, Mason’s car, and so much more. As far as the thinking though, this book had me thinking what it would be like to lose my memory. Would I be proud of who I am or would I be embarrassed as Emma is about what my life is about.
Definitely grab this book if you haven’t yet. I have yet to hear of anyone who doesn’t like this book and I am sure you will agree that it is a beautifully written, fantastic read.
