We live in a small house. Because of that, you would assume our electricity and gas bills are lower than someone living in a larger one. Sadly, that is not the case.
We have had an ancient thermostat that didn’t allow for much change, except when done manually, which we didn’t do enough. In the summer, our electric was high. In the winter, the gas bill showed a dramatic increase. Thanks to Nest, we now have a chance to lower our bills.
Nest connects to our home wi-fi. Because of that, we can adjust our temperature via a downloaded app, a feature I have come to love. It saves us money to adjust the temperature when we are away to a higher temp in the summer and lower in the winter. When we are on the way home, we can change it back to what we are more comfortable in.
But, you don’t have to manually adjust the temperature! Within a week, Nest learned our preferences and started adjusting itself. It learned our habits! When you’re not at home (the “Away” mode), it will automatically switch to an energy-efficient temperature. In independent studies, the Nest saved an average of 10-12% on heating and 15% on cooling bills.
Nest provides alerts and reminders for peace of mind: it monitors your heating/cooling equipment, and tells you if anything is not working correctly. You can also be alerted if your home’s temperature goes above or below limits you set. This is something that makes me feel great about having Nest in our home.
It was easy to install and is simple to work and adjust. We have the amazing Netgear® Nighthawk™ DST Router and DST Adapter in the house to make sure we never experience a problem with our internet. You will want a good router to run your Nest as well as any other electronics you may have. Trust me when I say the Netgear Nighthawk DST Router is one of the very best! We don’t have any dead zones in our small house, but many with a larger house will. The AC1900 comes with one DST, or “Dead Spot Terminator,” adapter – to eliminate your Wi-Fi dead zones; place it in an area where you get little/no reception, to improve Wi-Fi access. Additional adapters can be purchased for other dead zones.
The router is easy to set up, but don’t worry if you are not tech savvy. Best Buy makes it easy! The router includes a Wi-Fi extender and Geek Squad Set Up and Support via phone & web, for one full year.
With our new router, we have been able to enjoy SlingTV. We can enjoy live TV from many of the most popular channels, including ESPN, AMC, A&E, TNT, HGTV and more — for just $20 per month. Plus, watch the latest episodes of your favorite shows and new movies on demand. Plus, for just $5 more a month, my husband can buy the sports package and see all the sports he wants!

I’ve used Netgear in the past so I’m definitely going to need to check out Nest!
I’d love to have the Nest, and have looked at it a number of times. Sadly, I believe our old and wonky wiring would mean that it wouldn’t work.
I have known and wanted this Netgear product for awhile, but I had no idea about Nest! That is why I love bloggers, I get to learn about new products and their usefulness!
Thanks!!
Mitch
PS I lover the Sling TV info!
I totally want to get a Nest. I love how I can view it and change the temperature while I’m away.
Nest sounds like an amazing way to control the temperature in the home. It is awesome that it will recognize your habits too which is great technology. We love Best Buy for all our electronic needs and we are using a Netgear router now. I will have to check this router out. Thanks for sharing the information.
