One thing that has surprised me over the past week of online school is the lack of grammar and spelling in educated people. I am wondering how someone who, at a minimum, has a high school and associate’s degree can get through those degrees without learning how to write.
I understand that with Twitter and texting, shorthand and abbreviations have become commonplace. I do get that and try to be understanding of such. But, if you are going to school for your Bachelor’s degree, don’t you think you should put the slang and abbreviations aside for official school documents.
I am guessing part of my issue is that everything is online. There are no classroom breaks where we get to chat and get to know others. The written word is all I have to get to know other students in my class. But, I will admit, it is a huge no-no in my book to act like you are texting when you are writing on a discussion board the professor and everyone else in the class can see. I try to be professional in all I do online for school. I don’t want the first (or any) impression people get of me as one of not caring or uneducated or unprofessional.
Where is all this coming from? This was some of things I saw in my first week of class:
- I am bout2
- I got 2 n high school and 2 n college
- I will do that ltr
- (tons of LOLs in posts)
- Gots to be done
I am sorry. Those phrases in context of school work are not appropriate. There is a time and place and school is not it. All the things I mentioned (plus a bunch more) are on school assignments. Honestly though, even if it were just in chat for school, I don’t think it is really appropriate on official school documents. If you want to talk to someone in that way, email may be more appropriate in my opinion.
Agree? Am I expecting too much?
p.s. My spell check went crazy on this post! ha!
