Today I want to talk to you about SEO and Pinterest. We are going to do this by utilizing the description area of pins (you also need to do this in your profile, but that is a topic for another day). What you use for a description on your pins is one of the most important things you can do for your blog. I am going to give you a few things to consider when it comes to SEO and your Pinterest pins and boards. Keep reading!
Utilizing SEO in your Pinterest pins
~ Make sure to fill the descriptions with searchable keywords that describe the blog post, being careful to avoid looking spammy. The descriptions are rarely changed by those that repin so make it a good one! Keep in mind that your pin is not likely to be re-pinned (or even clicked on to look) if the description isn’t appealing. You are given 500 characters so use them wisely. For reference, a study was conducted and it was found that the most re-pinned and commented on items were accompanied by descriptions ranging from 200-310 words.
~There has been a lot of talk about hashtags. They truly serve no purpose in Pinterest. I know that many brands require a hashtag so that is fine but it is best to keep in mind that less is definitely better when it comes to hashtags. Too many and Pinterest will consider your pin spam.
~On your blog, use clear alt text with your images that will be pinned. Those are searchable so make them good!
~Finally, add a link in your description to your blog. That is a way to get your blog noticed, a backlink, and provides information to users.
Not to be forgotten are your Pinterest boards. While not the focus here, I wanted to mention the necessity of having a clear niche for your boards. That makes them more searchable. Consider breaking down big boards into more distinct niches. For example, break down a general “sweets” board into cakes, candy, cookies, etc. This will help your SEO as well!
It may take some time to get your pins SEO-friendly but the time is well spent. These simple tips not only make your pins/boards more searchable, but your blog posts as well.
