Yesterday was Johnny’s four-year check-up at the doctor’s. While sitting there and talking to the doctor about how he is going to be starting preschool soon, it suddenly hit me…
My baby boy is growing up.
It really wasn’t that long ago that he was in diapers, was it? Or wasn’t able to dress himself? I mean, it couldn’t have been that long ago since I held him in my arms before he went to bed each night. Where has the time gone?
He has turned into such an amazing little boy. He is smart, creative, and full of life. He is funny. He makes me laugh everyday… sometimes on purpose, sometimes not. He always has something to say. I am not sure when it happened, but he can carry on a full conversation… ones I look forward to and love to fill my days with. He is the most loving little boy and is always there to give hugs and kisses. At the same time, he is very independent and likes to do things on his own. He is a “big boy”, ya know?!?
He is the best big brother and loves his sister with every ounce of his being. He is so helpful with her and even though they argue, he is the first to stick up for his sissy if need be. He is almost always willing to share with her and even will give her his last bite of his favorite snack if she wants it. He loves her more than I could have hoped for.
He is a giving and kind little boy. He offered some of his own toys to a little boy that lost all of his in a house fire. I didn’t even ask or suggest it; he simply brought his cars in and said he wanted to give them. He is sensitive and caring and shows genuine concern for other people when they are sad or upset. He has a big heart and shows it often.
Him smiling makes me smile. Him laughing makes me laugh. He is an incredible boy and I am so proud to be his mommy. I miss him being my little baby boy, but I look forward to watching him grow into a fine young man. He tells me every day that he loves me and makes my heart swell. He tells me his is a lucky boy to have me as his mommy… what he doesn’t seem to understand is that I am the lucky one to have him for my son.

You are both lucky and so blessed to have each other. And you’re right, that smile is nothing short of brilliance.
p.s. they DO grow up to fast… 😉

Ours must be about the same age…mine turned 4 and I think I just went through those same thoughts after his well-child checkup before preschool starts!
