This Wordless Wednesday includes a PSA (Public Service Announcement). We went to a wedding this past weekend. The bride is an extended family member of my step-kids. The wedding was outdoors (and on the hottest day of the year thus far) and was pretty low-key. The bride had specific thoughts about what she wanted with her cake though. She wanted it to have a muted yellow edible ribbon on it and small blue and yellow flowers. I am unsure of what the flavor was but I am told the “test” cake was moist and delicious.
This is what was at the wedding:
You may be thinking… hmmm, that doesn’t look so bad. But, I want to take a closer look at this once-in-a-lifetime wedding cake. Look at the colors… they are bright and not at all a muted color. Then, take a look at those ribbons. Not only are they not edible, they are huge. They were supposed to be very thin to just mask the lines of where the cakes were stacked. Oh, and don’t miss the gaping ribbon or ugly flowers either. It was a mess.
The worst part that I saw was this.
Look at how the cake is spaced on the cake “stand”! It isn’t centered at all, in fact one side is falling off and the other side has extra space. I can’t believe that someone would consider that okay!
Besides how it looked, the cake was dry and lacking flavor. The icing (fondant) was so thick in parts that it was thicker than a layer of the cake. It was rough and not appetizing.
So, for the PSA… don’t entrust someone that you don’t know with your once-in-a-lifetime memories. If you are hiring someone to make a cake for you, do more than sample what they make. Ask for testimonials and look at their books to see what they have done before. If you are hiring a caterer, a photographer, or a florist, you should always check references or have a recommendation from someone you trust. Sadly, if you don’t do your homework, you have no one to blame but yourself.
(I forgot my camera so all pics were taken with my blackberry.)

Make sme wonder how someone could mess up a cake! I’d be so upset. and make sure you let them know it stunk and you told everyone you know including your on line friends.
It did look pretty thought. BUT when it comes to cakes looks is only in a picture we all want to know if it tastes good! sorry that part was a bust

I thought the cake looked lovely in the first pic but I supposed at closer inspection I can see the flaws. That’s such a shame. I’m sure the bride was devastated.
Stacy (the Random Cool Chick) says
Oh, that’s a bummer! I hope she gets some compensation for the disappointment!

Oh how horrible for the bride! I hope that was the only bad thing to happen… and she gets a refund or something. from a distance it looks fine, but everyone waits for a piece of cake! if it was my d.i.l. you would of heard her or her parents for miles! LOL! My first visit, happy WW!

What a shame. I don’t think that it looks that bad…but then again, I am not a cake decorator. I hope that the bride still had a wonderful day though!
Happy WW!

If it wasn’t what they originally decided on it, that is too bad. I hope she complained. I don’t think it should be free… but, they should make a special small cake for the bride and groom to either stuff in their freezer for their 1st anniversary, or make them a GC to make a fresh one to celebrate the first year.

Stefany says
That is a great idea. I will let her know when she gets back from her honeymoon that she should suggest that.
Wendy says
I didn’t get any say-so about my wedding cake (a church friend of my now MIL volunteered and I was not allowed to say otherwise), and it was awful. Not the colors I wanted, not the topper I wanted (a “gift” from MIL…get the idea she was out to sabotage me maybe?) and it tasted so bad I could hardly down a forkful.
But hey, at least I didn’t pay for it. 🙁
Petula says
I feel so bad for her. Have you talked to her since the wedding?
Scarlet says
Just gorgeous!
Lynsey Jones says
Yeah I am with Alicia, I thought it was pretty till you pointed stuff out, lol. I am sure most of the guests didnt notice, but I am sorry for the Bride. Not a memory she wanted to have.

one work: EEEEEKKKK…
really, you can buy fondant at michaels, color what hue you want, roll out and cut into ribbons. NOT hard at all. and not centering the cake? WOW, if I had been the bride I would have been ballistic!
Oh- mom and I made my wedding cake complete with white chocolate snowflakes and fondant ribbons. NOT hard!! Nor was the grooms cake with the white chocolate fondant- making samples ahead of time is the key!

Wow. You are a tough critic. All I saw was cake followed by some drool. LOL 😉

My daughter was involved when the bride picked out the cake so I got to hear about how bad it was immediately. ha!
Kat says
That is HORRID!!! LOL The first thing I saw was how OFF center the cake was on the base. I can’t believe anyone would make THAT thing as a wedding cake. There’s nothing elegant or “soft” about it! 🙁 Ick! The layers even looked lumpy … poor cake. haha Oh, and poor bride. Did she demand her money back? From what you described, that isn’t at all what she ordered 🙁

I have no idea if she did or not. I agree, it is sad.
Jennifer says
Hey my cake was covered in large ribbons and had tons of fake hydrangea flowers all over it. It was stunning!!! It was the kitchen’s job to remove it all it cut it up behind closed doors lol.
