It is no surprise to anyone who knows me that my dogs are very important to me. Feeding them high quality food is of the utmost importance to me so that they live long, happy, and healthy lives. Purina Pro Plan is the food we choose to feed our fur babies because it is nutrition I trust and taste they love. My love for my dogs goes so much further than their food though. I also like to make them special wardrobe items, like dog bandanas. Would you like to know how to make them too? Keep reading!
One of my kids’ favorite places to go is PetSmart. They love to see all the small animals, look at the dog toys, and see the aquariums. On our last trip to buy dog food, we stopped in the ProPlan aisle. It is super easy to find in PetSmart because the aisles are labeled!
There are several varieties to choose from but we know that our (lazy) Elvis needs weight management food so that is what we always buy. I like that Pro Plan offers a formula right for my dog. It is simple to find on the shelf (as are all the varieties). We also saw Pro Plan around the store in different places. Thankfully my husband was with me because we buy the biggest bag we can and feed our pups for weeks on it before buying again.
I was really happy to see a rebate offer in PetSmart on Pro Plan dog food! You can get it too! It is great getting food we would be buying for my pups for free with this rebate offer!
Visit the Purina Pro Plan MyPLAN website to get your dog’s MyPLAN recommendation and a rebate offer for a free bag of Purina Pro Plan Dry Dog Food (4-6lbs, up to $18.99.) Good only in U.S.A. A.P.O’s, F.P.O’s. Void where taxed, prohibited, restricted. Allow 6-8 weeks for shipment. LIMIT ONE REQUEST PER INDIVIDUAL, ADDRESS, or EMAIL ADDRESS. Offer expires 04/30/2015. See full terms.
Spoiling my pups comes easy to me, much to the dismay of my husband. I buy them treats and toys and I let them sleep on the sofa. I know, bad mommy! But, they are my babies. Just like my kids, the pups also deserve some fun. The wearing of dog bandanas, like the one you can see in the picture above, started with Rocky months ago. We put one on him as a joke but he really liked it. Once off, he carried it around wanting it back on. I decided it was time to enhance my pups’ wardrobe with some new fashionable bandanas. They can look snazzy eating up their delicious (to them) food!
Sewing is a skill I taught myself several years ago. You do not need to be an expert to follow along with this tutorial and make your very own doggy bandanas! I promise!
I started by seeing how big around my dog’s neck was. I made sure my longest side was about 4-5 inches longer than that length. I also made a cardboard seam allowance guide. I find they make it easier to hem. Just using it eliminates the need for measuring over and over and that saves a lot of time!
My longest side is 26 inches. I found it easiest to fold the fabric in half and cut a triangle with the point being the folded seam, that way you only have to cut two lines. From the center point of my longest side to the point is 10 inches. I had 1 inch around all sides to make the inseam. Here is a picture I made of a different bandana to show what I mean with the folds.
Sew a dog bandana!
Start by ironing a 1/2 inch seam around all edges. Once that is completed, you can fold the seam over, hiding the cut edge, and iron again. Place a few pins to keep the seams closed until you can sew.
The corners can be a bit tricky, depending on how you cut your fabric. I tucked the point in and ironed them down.
Once all seams have been pinned, you are ready to start sewing. I started sewing straight down the middle of the seam. Hold the seam in place as you are sewing to to keep it from pulling out. Also, make sure to back-sew on each end, turn at the corners with the needle down, and take your time!
Once you have sewn all edges, you are ready to do the velcro! I cut mine 3.5 inches long. The key here is making sure you sew one piece on the wrong side corner and one piece on the right side corner. This will allow your edges to overlap when being worn. I only pinned my velcro in places for one small side of sewing. After that, it makes the velcro pucker so remove the pin and just hold the piece in place as you sew.
Cut your strings and you are all done! My pups are loving their new bandanas! Rocky and Elvis have matching blue flame bandanas. Jemma loves them the most.
I also made a camo bandana for Rocky.

Hi. I so like this bandana. It’s my little furbabys 2nd birthday. I got a brand new singer 9100 today. Needed to do something on it, your bandana pattern was just what I was looking for. I have down sized it to fit my Bichon Fraise. Thank you for sharing.
Best wishes
Lyn

Thanks for stopping by! We used the last bandanas I made until they literally fell apart. I think it may be time for some fun spring/summer colors!

My girlfriend and I are enamored by your cardboard hemming aid! We’re in our 70’s and saying “Why didn’t I think of that!” (back when we were sewing for our young girls). By the way, we’re in different states but I saw her pin and comment just as I was hitting “Visit” … need to message her now that we’re both dummies for not having “thunk of this before”, ha!
Thank you for the blog!

to make it easier, fold a square of fabric into a triangle putting right sides together. Stitch around from fold to fold leaving an opening for turning. Turn it right side out through the hole. Hand stitch the hole up and press seams. Your could edge stitch around the triangle for reinforcement if needed. This is much easier than all the hemming around the bandanna.
Stefany says
I actually don’t like to use that method for these (although I do love it for other things). For the bandanas, I find it makes them too thick and they don’t lay as well on the dogs, making them seem to bulky.
Jody Flannigan says
This seems easy enough, however I’ve read your instructions over and over and can’t quite get it. Is the bandana sewn with two layers? I know it depends on the size dog, but what is the inch ratio for all three sides? Maybe I’m just not getting it? Maybe a video tutorial might help? Lol
Stefany says
Hi Jody! There is an image right above the directions that may help more as far as directions. But yes, I did fold it over to make single cuts so it is in two layers for cutting. I did check for you on what the other bandanas we have (both bought and made) for the point length and from center of the longest edge to the point that lays outward, it is 10 inches on all of them. So, figuring out your longest side, then go to the middle and make sure you have 10 inches after your hem. Then just connect the long triangle sides to the edge that goes around the neck.
Does that answer for you better?

I’m glad I am not the only one who has a hard time with instructions, a video tutorial would be fantastic, I am a visual learner 🙁 🙂

I really love the fabric design you chose, it fits him perfectly. I should some one for my cats haha
Stefany says
haha! I would love to see it!

Instead of velcro I make a casing and slip the collar through.
Stefany says
That is a good idea but we take their collars off and on so that wouldn’t work quite so well for us.
Mama to 5 BLessings says
Those are really stylish doggies! How cute is that, they do not seem to mind them either!
Stefany says
Nope, not too much. They are pretty spoiled though. haha

Love the pattern. Great job on sewing the bandana. I need to pull out my sewing machine more often.
Stefany says
I hear ya there! I wish I could sew more but I just don’t have the room to keep it out all the time.

That’s so funny that he likes his new accessory! My dogs never liked when we put anything on them, lasted seconds.
Stefany says
That’s how all my other dogs have been. Not Rocky!
Amanda Ripsam says
Your dog looks so cute in a bandana, I don’t own a dog or a cat. We just have fish.
Stefany says
Fish bandanas may not work so well, huh? 🙂
Anne | HealthySouthernMama.com says
That is so hilarious that he wanted it back on!! A fashion conscious dog … haha!! I so miss having a dog (son has allergies) 🙁
Stefany says
haha! Yeah, he loves his bandanas. That stinks about the pup and allergy issues. 🙁

We did this exact craft when we had dogs. Except we would look for licensed material and make NFL team ones so they could root (bark) along with us when watching a game!
Stefany says
I plan on getting some Cardinals (GO CARDS!) fabric for baseball season!
Tough Cookie Mommy says
I love the pattern on your dog bandana. I’m not sure that my dog would stay still long enough for me to take a photo of him wearing one.
Stefany says
Haha! I have poser dogs!
Jenna Wood says
Our pup loves wearing accessories but I never thought to make here a bandanna myself, I’ll have to try this out! #client
Stefany says
Definitely do Jenna! It cost me a about a third the cost to make all 3 of these as compared to buying just one from the store AND I can make them for the seasons/holidays/etc. 🙂
