Most households have a microwave. But, there is more that can be done with a microwave than reheating food, making TV dinners, or popping popcorn. Today I am going to share 10 alternative uses for the microwave oven!
- No more stale bread — Is your bread a bit hard? Wrap it in a moist paper towel and put it in the microwave in 20 second increments. It will make your bread soft and fresh-tasting again!
- Oops! Save the stamp — Did you stick a stamp on an envelope and then make a mistake? You can remove that stamp without ruining it. Place a drop of water on the stamp and then microwave for 10 seconds. It will peel right off!
- Make a heating pad — Add rice to a sock, tie it off, and microwave in 30 second intervals until it reaches a desired heat. It is an inexpensive heating pad that can be used time and again!
- Brown sugar lumpy? — If you brown sugar is hard and lumpy, add a moist towel to the sugar bag and microwave for 20 seconds. It will be soft again!
- Disinfect your sponge — Put your damp sponge into the microwave for one minute to disinfect it. Do this once a week!
- Toast nuts or seeds — Put a handful of nuts or seeds into a microwave-safe owl with some oil. Microwave for 60 seconds then stir. This can take up to about 5 minutes repeat the 60 seconds, stir routine after each minute. This works great for nuts, sunflower seeds, and even pumpkin seeds.
- Revive your honey — Your glass-jarred (not plastic) honey may look crystallized but that doesn’t mean you have to toss it. Simple take off the lid and microwave for 30 second increments until it becomes smooth again.
- Peel garlic — Add a garlic clove to your microwave for 15 seconds. It will allow the skin to be removed quickly and easily.
- Make your fruits give more juice — Getting ready to juice an orange or lemon? Microwave the uncut fruit for 10 seconds to get more juice out of it!
- Speed bread making — Don’t have hours to let your dough rise? Place an 8oz cup of water in the back of your microwave oven. Put your un-risen dough in the center of the microwave in a microwave-safe bowl and heat on the lowest power for 3 minutes. Let it sit for 3 minutes in the microwave. Heat the dough for 3 more minutes and let it rest for 6 minutes. Your dough will be double in size and ready for baking!
