Essential Oils used to naturally help an eye stye

I’ve shared a few times how much I love my essential oils. Well today I want to share one more.

Jemma has been getting eye styes on her right eye. They come out of nowhere. Originally I was treating it with some medicine we had (prescription) but her styes got worse instead of better after 3 days of use. I decided to turn to my oils, which I admit I should have done first.

Here is what she looked like on Day one (pardon the cookie messy face):

It was this day that I started her on a twice daily treatment with Lavender and Melaleuca. Each morning and each night I put about 4 drops of Fractionated Coconut Oil, 1-2 drops of Lavender, and 1-2 drops of Melaleuca in my palm. I then used my finger and mixed it together and rubbed a line underneath her eye. It does NOT need to touch the stye itself but with our oils, it wouldn’t harm her. It would just be uncomfortable possibly.

The day after the picture was taken, she looked worse but the stye was actually starting to heal. Day 3 was slightly better. Day 4, well the picture says it all.

Jemma day 4 stye treatment

That’s right! The stye is GONE!!! I will continue treatment for 2 more days as this seems to help keep the stye from coming back.

The best part? Jemma doesn’t fight me on this and she was very unhappy with the ointment. This doesn’t change her vision. This doesn’t have side effects. The essential oils did the job that the ointment wouldn’t do and they did it in a way that I feel good about!

Now, when we see first signs of a stye, we apply the essential oils and the stye doesn’t even develop! We avoid all the pain that comes with them thanks to our essential oil treatment!

My nurse practicioner just told me to use tea tree oil in conjunction with antibiotic on a staph infection on my foot so I don’t see why it can’t be used for a stye which is likely a mild staph infection. It’s diluted, people. It’s not like she was pouring a whole dropperful of tea tree neat into the girl’s eye. The world is full of alarmists. Thank you for posting this. I have my first stye ever and yes, I did go looking for medications but those are more to do with comfort and moisture than getting at the bacteria which is what things like tea tree and lavender have been shown to help with, somewhat. Even if it is likely to clear up on its own in 3 or 4 days, I like that I’m doing something proactive and that helps the anxiety.

The first stye i got my instincts drove me to use tea tree oil and within 5 days the stye was gone. I also drank water with 3 drops of oregano oil which helped. When my partner got a stye i applied tea tree oil and with 6 days it was gone. I used warm water with 5 drops of tea tree oil on a cotton pad and applied it to the stye. Yes, there is a mild sensation as the oil penetrates the stye which is expected. I got positive results every time.

Hello, I just stumbled upon your page as I was looking for a cure for this persistent chalazion cyst that I have on my lower eyelid. I have had it now for almost seven weeks. I have been using all sorts of natural remedies to NO avail. I am trying desperately to not have that dreaded surgery that may or may not work. I have just made your special potion and am praying this will work. Can you offer me any more advice or help, I am so depressed over this and have tried so many things. Trying to cure this is for sure the definition of insanity.

We are still using the tea tree oil and lavender. Sometimes we use only lavender if the TT oil is irritating. We don’t put it near the eye; just around it and it works every time. My daughter had one this week that is gone in 3 days.

Can you tell me if you have applied lavender and tree oil to you chalazion? My grand daughter, 7, gets them often and 4 have been surgically removed and another in 3 weeks has appeared.
Would love to hear how u are!

I get styes every now and then, and usually they start of annoying and within 24 hours get very painful and swollen. After about four days they are gone… finally. Not because of this article, but because of my love of tea tree oil I started using diluted tea tree oil to treat my styes.

I thoroughly wash my eye in the shower. Then I put a cup of cold water and a tiny drop of tea tree in a glass and then dip a clean washcloth in it. I rest the cloth on my closed eye for 10 minutes. Yes, it stings mildly but if diluted properly FOR ME it is not that bad. Using this method my stye NEVER gets any worse and after 24 hours it is almost gone.

I understand that there are people with sensitive skin, but for ME this works wonders that nothing else can. I have a feeling some people do not understand how powerful tea tree oil is and they are not diluting it enough for their sensitivities.

I have never had anything happen to my eye…

I’ve been up most of the night in discomfort and pain from a forming stye. I made myself a warm compress and applied it several times throughout the night. I found this article and applied the suggested oils. Immediately, I felt relief from the discomfort and pain. It still uncomfortable but not as bad at all. I’m very interested to see how the treatment goes over the next few days. I’m disappointed by all the negative comments on here. Essential oils have really helped me in a number of ways modern medicine have failed. Thank you so much for this information! God bless you!

I hesitantly tried this today. First stye and it is lingering. I was careful to go around my eye as directed and stay away from the eye itself. Improvement was noticed within hours. I am also using warm water compresses but until I used the oils they were not improving the stye. Thank you so much! Love my oils!

Stys clear up on there own in 4 days, sometimes even 3. This is bunk. And you have said a word to those who said they ended up in excruciating pain. Where is your Doterra advice for them?? Besides, any real Aromatherapist who has studied essential oils in depth would scream if they saw you telling people to put oils near their eyes. Especially in that concentration. Oils are powerful and nothing to take so lightly. I have no prob with Doterra oil, but only the uneducated manner in with most of the reps tend to share medical advice without true knowledge.

Well I will say, you are incorrect about the comment stys heal on their own in 3-4 days. My daughter has had the same sty ( internal lower lid) since she was 15mnths old, she is now 4yrs old. We have tried antibiotics, warm compresses, washing her face with baby wash twice daily ( all recommended by her eye specialist). To no avail! The second eye specialist recommends flax oil , which has helped very little. My daughter will need surgery to drain that sty. I have started using essential oils for other issues, but am willing to try this remedy for her eye if it keeps her from surgery. My husband and I are both nurses, so we would for sure be very cautious.

You are sooo wrong. I had a stye in left eye over one week before starting to clear. Now I’ve got one in the right eye – and have had it one week – and no going down. I’ve tried the drops eye dr. prescribed but see no difference. It has only gotten bigger.

Joined Young Living Essential Oils a couple of months ago with my twin. I’m going to her house to get some of the fractionated oil to use with the Melaleuca and Lavendar tonight.

Thank for the tip. Can’t wait to try it.

I respectfully disagree with your initial statement. I worked for an ophthalmologist for 12 years. Many absolutely do NOT clear up in a few days as I assisted in hundreds of these procedures, as well as subcutaneous steroid injections. If an oil works, it works. If a medicated eye drop works, it works. This person is simply kind enough to share what worked for her, in hopes it may help another person. If you disagree, you could either keep scrolling, or just be decent.
I surely wish you all the best.

I love your comment! Exactly whT I would have said! I have many years of experience in the Optometry industry and you are spot on! I am currently suffering from a huge upper lid stye. I am a distributor with Young Living oils. My stye was absolutely ginormous this morning which is into day 2. I have been applying Lavender and Purification around the eye area from the brow line down to the top of cheek bone. I also used a drop of Copaiba for the pain. I am also using the tea bag ritual, soaking black teabag and applying it as a warm compress over the eye. After 36 hours I am feeling some amazing relief! And the swelling is starting to abate!

I got my first stye in my early twenties. Normally I just wait it out, but this time around, I tried your little concoction of lavender, melaluca, and coconut oil. Actually my mother put it together because I don’t believe in her power crystal and essential oil healing methods. I didn’t know what melaleuca was until I applied the concoction to my eye. Next time I think I’ll go ahead and grab icy hot and rub it in my eye instead. Id rather do something stupid than be mislead. I barely put it on my eyelid, and next thing you know my mother learned the extent of my vocabulary of foul words. It took about…. 20 min of sitting under a cold faucet and holding an ice pad on my eye for relief from the sting. Did you know melaleuca is toxic for human consumption…. Why the hell would you put it near your eye.

    5 drops coconut, 2 melaleuca, 2 lavender.

Water forces oil deeper into the tissues, so especially in eyes use coconut oil or milk to rinse the oil out if it accidentally gets in the eye. Should take about a second to clear. Also don’t apply the oil directly to the eye-or an area near the lid where it can easily get in, put it around the stye, &/or add a few drops to a warm compress when the eye is
      closed.

Not to mention the photos prove nothing, styes generally clear up within a couple of days anyway. The oils likely did nothing. Also coconut oil can clog pores, jojoba far more closely mimics the skin’s natural sebum. Still, you shouldn’t put it that close to the eye, mostly because styes generally are TRAPPED OIL.

My grandmother-in-law has been using essential oils for their anesthetic qualities for over 50 years and when I asked if there was something to relieve my stye she said NO absolutely NOT don’t put anything anywhere near your eye or the tender skin around the eye. She recommended a warm or cool wet washcloth for relief and to avoid touching it.

I’m not trying to be a jerk, but PLEASE PEOPLE do more research than putting something around your eye before just doing what a blogger says to do. Even putting it AROUND the stye is far too close to the eye itself. Especially for a child who could absentmindedly rub their eye.

I have used just Lavender on Jemma before. I found that it did help but not as much as with Melaleuca. It was more of a comfort thing than getting rid of the stye all together. I would give it a try but definitely grab some Melaleuca when you can. It is good stuff and great to have on hand for its antibiotic properties!

I use Lavender and Melaleuca for the stye. I have a roller ball bottle that I use but you can use CLEAN fingers or a qtip and spread it around the eye and over brow. Frankincense is a good oil and may help. I would definitely get the other two when you can though. The pustules on your arm sound painful! I would not squeeze them (nor would I ever do that). Use diluted on guard to see if it takes care of it. Again, Lavender would be healing.

Black pepper is known as “the poor man’s Melissa”, so it does have some immunity support, but if you have Frankincense, I’d use that before black pepper, It’s also a “hot oil”… so IF you choose to use black pepper around your eyes, heavily dilute it with the FCO.

    Hi Everyone 🙂

I have had re occurring styes since I was 14; I am now 20 and have had 3 Chalezion Surgeries.
Turns out I Have Rosacea and Ocular Rosacea which is why I keep getting them.

So if you or your children have reoccurring it would be good to get tested.
This can also be misdiagnosed as Blepharitis (You do have blepharaitis; however, they don’t realise it is caused by the underlying rosacea).

I currently have another Hordeolum (A stye that doesn’t have a head and is very internal); & have used Rosehip oil on it as I do not currently have Lavender or TeaTree. It has significantly improved within 4 hours!

Thank you so much for the oils tip! x

My daughter has been dealing with two styes deep rooted styes for about 3 months now… Two styes. Three months. It’s getting a bit ridiculous… And now she’s getting a third one this morning. Nothing’s working at clearing them up, I’m definitely giving this concoction a try.

You realize the stye can and usually does go away on its own in 3-5 days. Sometimes it may take longer. How do you know it was the essential oils and not nature taking its course that cured your child’s stye?

My daughter has reoccurring styes. They do not go away on their own in 3 to 5 days and took over a week before we started using essential oils. Regardless, if I can get rid of it faster, I most certainly will because they are painful and no mother wants to see their child in pain unnecessarily.

I’ve only been using essential oils for about a month. When I first started them I was fighting off a cold/sinus and the second day I felt a bump when I blinked..I couldn’t actually see it but I could feel it. I continued with LLP & oregano..those were the only oils I had at the time..the cold was better by the next day. Well yesterday I had a definite stye pop up. I have been putting fennel and lavender in my face for several days and I know a stye could be caused by a clogged duct. So now I’m wondering if the oil I’ve been putting in my face could have caused the stye. Any thoughts on this being the problem?? This morning I used the melaleuca and lavender under my eye to try and get rid of it. I hope it works.

Actually, a stye is caused by bacteria from the nasal passages. So if you’re just getting over a sinus infection, it makes perfect sense that a stye would develop… See this article: http://www.allaboutvision.com/conditions/styes.htm

“3. A stye is caused by staphlococcal bacteria.
This bacterium is found in the nose and is transferred easily to the eye when you rub your nose, then your eye.”

Thanks for the info (essential oils) to use on the stye. I have a stye that has been on my lower right eye lid for a long time. I think due to me squeezing and picking at it with my fingers constantly re-infected it over and over.I’ve tried so many different things: Tea bags, eye ointments, and several types of antibiotice eye drops and even washing it with baby shampoo to keep it clean. I’ve even read on somone’s internet posting that if you rub a gold (14k) ring on the stye LOL – that it will remove the stye. So I’m going to try using the coconut oil, tea tree, and lavender oils. Hope it works:)

    Hi,

I have a similar story concerning curing sty. My doctor was opposed to me using anything other than the prescription ointment, but after almost 2 weeks with no visible improvement, I opted for teatreeoil. I first put on warm compresses (50/50 hot water and organic applecider) for about 10 min, followed by pure teatreeoil applied with a q-tip directly on the infected area. Intense burning reaction, lots of tears, but extremely effective. Have since dilluted the teatreeoil in castoroil, and now, 5 days after I started the treatment, my styes (I had 3, both on the upper and lower lid) are virtually gone. Will however continue for a few more days to prevent them from reappearing.

I only have Thieves & Tea Tree on hand.. do you think they would work similarly to what you used? My 3yr old has been fighting styes for the past year or so. We have been able to keep them at bay using warm compresses, but it isn’t fully kicking them for him. We have even used the prescription eye cream but saw similar results as you did.

How neat I never thought there was anything you could do for a sty.

I used this remedy last night before I went to bed but I made it a little stronger by adding more lavender and tea tree. I wouldn’t suggest anyone add more essential oil because it did burn very badly but the good news is the stye shrunk to 3/4 its size by the time I woke up. Amazing. Thanks for sharing this treatment!! Essential oils are a gift from God. God Bless.

I am so glad it worked for you Jackson! I use 1-2 drops but I am using this on a baby (less than 2 years old). Absolutely use more if you are comfortable doing so. Keep up with the oils for a few days after it is gone too!

I used Cypress and my stye was gone the next day, but I could still feel it inside when I blinked so added Frankincense over the Cypress and now all gone. Will try the Melaleuca and Lavendar too, because I get styes all the time!

Yes it is! I love my oils for many reasons but this one is at the top of the list right now.
